Amy Rowland
Graduate trainee manager The Macdonald Alveston Manor Hotel
Amy joined our graduate training scheme after graduating from Sheffield Hallam University with a first
class degree in Hospitality Management.
What do you enjoy about the scheme?
Having the opportunity to use the theory I learnt at university and the practical knowledge I gained
from my placement in the USA is fantastic. In each department I am a supervisor so I'm expected to take
responsibility for my team and myself and contribute at management meetings.
What skills do you use most?
Every department requires different skills so I'm learning all the time. Key skills in Food & Beverage
are customer service and time management whereas in Front of House I've had to draw on my organisational
skills and learn how to delegate effectively.
What advice would you offer current students?
Getting practical experience before graduating is invaluable, whether it's on a placement or part time
whilst studying. When looking for a graduate scheme, talk to your careers advisor who will have links
with hotel groups and search both hotel and hospitality websites for news on schemes.
